The German market has long since been held up as a model of anaerobic digestion development and source of lessons learnt in relation to anaerobic digestion and biogas. On it’s own, it still represents the majority of all biogas production globally. However, over the past 12 months development of new anaerobic digestion projects has ground to a relative halt with new plants solely focussing on the biowaste sector where there are still rewarding incentives for processing bio-waste and producing high efficiency uses of electricity and heat.
The UK has plenty to learn but is there a risk that if we try and bypass some of the stages the German market phased through we might not achieve what have set out to – namely a robust, secure and stable biogas market contributing a reasonable share of the UK’s renewables gas, power and transport fuel portfolio?
