The International Energy Agency (Task 40 and Task 37) has published a detailed report on the status of biomethane (including upgraded biogas and bio-SNG) production, grid injection and use in the various IEA countries.
It also illustrates the options and needs for the development of biomethane supply strategies with the focus on improved trade; and provides an overview of expected future development of the biomethane sector as it develops over the coming years.
Content of the publication:
– Production technologies for biomethane
– Barriers and opportunities for production and use
– Gas distribution
– Environmental demands
– Sustainability standards for biomethane
– Cost of production
– Practical example of a biomethane market – Germany
– Expectations of future development
– Stepping stones towards market deployment
– Conclusions and Recommendation
BioWatt firmly believes that biogas/ biomethane represents the most efficient and flexible renewable energy source the world has and that the industry needs to work together to remove some of the more counter intuitive barriers that currently limit the number of biomethane projects being developed in the UK. Currently, the RHi review and concerns relating to the existing and proposed [tougher] sustainability criteria are undermining confidence in the market. Our view is that some form of hierarchy must be adopted that should lead the incentivisation of anaerobic digestion and biogas – and that higher efficiency, waste fed models should be given priority.
